The Parador Villafranca del Bierzo, the capital of this very beautiful region, has reopened following an extensive renovation.
Villafranca del Bierzo used to be an overnight stop for pilgrims walking to Santiago de Compostela in Galicia.
From the Parador there are scenic views of the Piedrahita del Cebreiro Pass and of the Ancares mountain range to the north of the town.
The Parador's garden is filled with flowers and bushes, and the wild grapevine spreads onto the facade of the building.
The Villafranca del Bierzo Parador is clad in stone and slate in the style of the region and neighbouring Galicia. While the interior gives the elegance, status and comfort of a custom designed contemporary building. It has a large restaurant, cafe and lounge. |We really enjoyed our stay in Villafranca del Bierzo. The parador is modern, the rooms are very comfortable and attractive, and we enjoyed all our meals. It is not as luxurious as some other paradores, but the price is lower, and it was the nicest place to stay in the area. The town is delightful and has a lot of character, with many old, beautiful churches and monuments. The whole area is really interesting, with beautiful scenery - vineyards, hills, and medieval villages We'd visit again.|

|We were pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago and splurged at the Paradores along the way. All are wonderful and we heartily recommend staying at them. Accommodations are excellent, food is delicious and staff were helpful with making arrangements throughout our journey.|

|Thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this Parador. The bedrooms were newly refurbished and extremely clean, comfortable and quiet. The hotel was ideally situated for easy access to both the town and the motorway. Breakfast was very good, with an excellent selection available. Unfortunately dinner was a disaster, not because of the food but the complete lack of atmosphere. Harsh fluorescent lights and very few diners in a large room and the waiting staff were dressed like chambermaids. There are plenty of restaurants nearby however and we would still return to this Parador.|

|The most modern Parador we stayed in but very comfortable. Help with bags, friendly staff, restaurant recommendations. Would stay again if in the area.. Pretty little town to visit whilst friends were doing the more serious walking.|
