A mixture of history, art and tradition, the Hotel Parador Santiago de Compostela forms a magnificent corner of the main square with the Cathedral in one of the most visited regional capitals in the world.
Hostal Dos Reis Catolicos - view

Also known as Hostal dos Reis Catolicos it was originally a Royal Hospital and dates back to 1499. It provided lodging and shelter for the numerous pilgrims making their way to Santiago, an age old practice which continues to this day.

Considered to be the oldest hotel in the world it is also one of the most luxurious.

It has four cloisters of immense beauty, elegant reception rooms, spectacular bedrooms and a luxurious dining room.

The restaurants of the Parador group hotels offer a wide and varied menu. As well as international cuisine they also offer a diabetic, vegetarian and gluten free option.

The restaurant at the Santiago de Compostela Hotel also specialises in Galician dishes and has revived ancient recipes and created its own. For example sea bass fillets baked in Iberian bacon and served with mint broad beans; scallops stuffed with sea urchin; sirloin steak in a cebreiro cheese sauce and for dessert, perhaps filloa crepes filled with apple compote. A stroll through Santiago is of great interest. Visit the Cathedral, the ”Plaza do Obradoiro” where the Parador is located, the Gemirez and Rajoy Palaces, the Church of Santa Maria del Sar, the Monastery of San Marin Pinario, the Museum of Tapestries, the Church of Santa Maria Salome and the Museo do Pobo Galego.

Santiago de Compostela enjoys many religious festivals including the "Feria del Ganado" fiesta which is held during the month of May and lasts for ten days. This festival offers a particular insight into the "claimed" Celtic roots of Galicia and features a significant amount of Celtic folk music and dancing. Gastronomy is also very prominent during this particular festival with the various regional dishes of Galicia taking centre stage in the celebrations.

The main religious festival is on July 25th when solemn Mass is celebrated with the National Offering to the Apostle Santiago (Saint James) who is buried in the Cathedral. The processions during Holy Week are also very impressive.

The Galicia region is located in North West Spain and is a very beautiful and interesting area to visit. Take a tour by car and see the cliffs of the Costa do Morte (Death Coast) which are very impressive as are the splendid views that you will encounter at Finisterre (Land‘s end). Drive around the Spanish Rias and visit the many delightful small fishing towns and villages. bedroom at Parador de Santiago da Compostela

My sister and I stayed at the Parador in Santiago de Compostela after we completed the Caminho Portuguese. What a lovely way to end our Way! This is the second time I've stayed here, and it was just as magical as the first. The rooms were beautiful, the service welcoming and the whole atmosphere was very inspiring and it's wonderful to feel a part of the history of the Camino and the hotel itself. The only meals we ate there were breakfast and the buffet was wonderful. I have eaten at the restaurant before (in the old stables) and can say that was a lovely experience that I didn't (sadly) get to repeat. Will definitely be back! I'm not sure many other hotels can boast such an amazing location to a beautiful Cathedral as that of St James'. Thanks for a lovely stay.

My husband and I are from Australia and we stayed for 2 nights in October. We drove into Santiago de Compostela and yes, it was difficult finding out way into the square, but when we arrived at the entrance of the Parador, we totally forgot about that difficulty. Staff met us and assisted with our luggage. Room and bed very comfortable. The hotel itself is history and worth exploring. Best breakfast we experienced on our whole trip. The hotel so convenient and we just walked out each day and enjoyed the atmosphere of the square and the wonderful cathedral. Whilst the bagpipes annoyed us, we were fortunate enough to hear 2 young men singing - the 2 tenors - magnificent - so good, we bought their CD. We totally recommend this experience to everyone and hope to return to this Parador in Santiago de Compostela

We had a wonderful stay at the Parador in Santiago do Compostela in early September. It was an unforgettable experience. Everything from the reception when we arrived until the end of our 3 night stay was absolutely perfect. It all felt very luxurious. I would recommend it withour reservation. The only other comment I would make concerns finding the Parador when coming by road. We did not see any clear signage and had several abortive attempts to find the right road down to the square.

Our 3 day stay in this parador was wonderful. We really enjoyed it. The hotel is magnificent. Our room was lovely, really big and a lovely big bathroom and the beds were really comfortable. Having so many sitting rooms and sitting areas is great. We used the lovely room on the ground floor each evening - no-one else joined us any evening. We had one meal in the Enxebre restaurant which was good and huge helpings - we could have shared if we'd known! The breakfast was wonderful - a real feast and marvellous selection of everything, and lovely to be able to view the square from the windows. The 'museum' plaques around the hotel are very interesting and it's good to be able to walk all round the courtyards and different floors to view the architecture. Parking is good at the underground park on Avenida San Juan XXIII and cheaper than at the hotel, and not too far to walk. It's lovely to be so central in the town and right next door to the cathedral and the beautiful large plaza. Truly a great experience! (except, as someone else has said, for the bagpiper - fortunately the double glazing in the bedroom was very good so we could hardly hear him there)
