Parador GijonHotel Molino Viejo |
|
This Parador occupies an old hundred year old mill located in the Isabel
la Catolica Park, one of the most beautiful spots of the town of Gijon.
San Lorenzo beach is close by enabling an enjoyable stay here for many unforgettable days. The interior recreates a cozy atmosphere with comfortable and sunny facilities. The bar is particularly attractive overlooking a small island with many types of birds enjoying the water including black and white swans. In accordance with the tradition of the Paradors, the restaurant specialises
in local dishes. It also has a gluten free menu.
Lovers of Asturias cider "sidra", and others, should ask to see the special room reserved for drinking this regional specialty. Gijon is a busy town originally based on the fishing port. The fishing boats at anchor in the harbour at high tides can be seen six hours later lying on the sand. Cimadevilla, the sailors' quarter in the town is worth a visit. Places in Gijon worth visiting include the Church of San Juan Bautista, the Museum and the house of Jovellanos. An interesting day trip is a visit to the striking mountains known as
Picos de Europa. The driving can be broken with visits to the cathedral
of Oviedo and the sanctuary of Covadonga.
Other places to visit include the wildlife reserve of Muniellos, and the lakes of Enol and Ercina. Festivals in Gijon include El Antroxu which is held on Carnival Tuesday
(the last day before lent), the Black Week which is held in July) and the
celebration of the day of San Miguel which is September 29th. For film
lovers, there is a Cinema Festival held every year in November.
There is heating, air conditioning, piped music, meeting rooms, currency exchange, lift, satellite television, free internet access in communal areas, parking facilities (without security and limited places), garden, children's play area, restaurant and bar. The Parador has facilities for the disabled. Distance from the nearest airport is approximately 45 kms, train station is 2 kms away and the nearest port is 3 kms away.

| My wife and I had the most delightful stay at Parador de Gijon on 15 Sept. Our room was spacious, the bed almost as comfortable as our own, and the staff could not be more helpful. The park setting that the parador is located in is just wonderful. Just a short distance (1.0 K) north is a long beach and boardwalk (great for a 5+ kilometer RT run), with great shops and lots of restaurants. The restaurant at the Parador de Gijon was superb; the complimentary breakfast was excellent, as was our dinner the evening before. I would go back to this parador, but next time I would stay a few extra nights. |
