We wish we had known just how wonderful this hotel was before we booked in for one night. If we had known we would have stayed longer!
The reception we received was friendly and efficient. Our room was spacious. warm and comfortable, with a lovely view of the garden. Once the window shutters were closed there was absolute silence in the room.
The public rooms had a wonderful decor and the food in the restaurant was delicious!
Th hotel is located on the Town Square right in the heart of Santillana. It is not the easiest location to find, but once yo are there the car parking is very good.
Our favourite Parador hotel is the Lerma Palace, but the Gil Blas is very high on our list and we are looking forward to our return visit.

  2. Charles Corser says:

It was a pleasure to stay at Gil Blas for one night on 12th September. Our welcome was warm, the room good and we had an excellent meal in the restaurant. Somewhere in the booking (probably my fault) two children were included-surprising as we had booked the golden days deal! This was sorted out and as far as I know no extra charge was made.

  3. Lori and Darcy Moch says:

We had the pleasure of staying at your lovely hotel Gil Blas Parador in July 2011. We unfortunately could only
stay one night but we enjoyed every moment of our stay. The 2 rooms we had were comfortable, the views amazing and overall setting wonderful. How often does a person get the opportunity to stay in luxury that dates back to the 7th century? The village was quaint and we were glad we were able to enjoy it’s history.

  4. Richard Gowland says:

Our last night on the tour. We enjoyed our stay. One of our party had a problem with an odour in the room. The staff responded very quickly and changed his room. The village has many tourist traps, but there was a really good pottery where we talked to the potter and bought some of his work.

  5. Mrs. A de JOng says:

We loved this parador and got two rooms right above the main entrance. The food was wonderful and the staff was friendly.
We’ve enjoyed our short stay in Santillana.

  6. William Howat says:

My wife and I have stayed at a number of Paradores over the years and have enjoyed them all. On this occasion (October) we did find a shortcoming and it was one shared with the Parador at Leon. We ate from the regional menus in both Paradores. It was evident that the English translations in the “Arte Breve De Cocina” in both had been done by a non -native English Speaker. The worst example was at Gil Blas where we were confronted with “Puff pastry with Anchovy Scum,” which turned out to be a savoury cream with an anchovy on top which was very nice. Its a minor complaint, we would have been content to use the Spanish version, but given the high standards of the Paradores and their international clientel it is unprofessional. If you provide translations then it is essential that they make sense. I am more than happy to be of further assistance (at no charge).

  7. Patrick Tierney says:

My wife and I have stayed in a number of Paradors and had visited Santillana previously so we were looking forward to staying in the Gil Blas this time. Unfortunately, the experience was a disappointment on a number of levels. Our reception was brusque rather than welcoming and our room was cramped (perhaps because we had booked a Golden Years deal) and good deal less pleasant than in other Paradores we have visited. Once beyond the reception area the quality of the public rooms was poor: the bar was like a mediocre town cafe and the dining room little better. The rooms have no character whatsoever. The staff in the dining room were the only people who seemed to be working really hard. The dining room was understaffed at dinner and the same held true for breakfast where the rush to attend to people meant that our hot eggs did not materialise until we reminded the waitress after half an hour of waiting. She was not to blame as there were only two people on duty.
The final straw was the residents’ lounge which was kept in total darkness, perhaps in the hope of discouraging anyone from using it. When I did venture in, I could find no way to switch on the lights and had to hang around for 20 minutes at reception (rarely manned) to discover that only they could switch the lights on. What a ridiculous arrangement.
So, easily the worst Parador we have experienced and I could not recommend it to anyone.

  8. Bev says:

We stayed in this paradore in early September and thought it was great, the breakfast was to die for.
The village was busy but better at night and had many bars and restuarants to choose from.
    Would recommend it.

  9. Colonel Paul Long says:

Had we realised that we would be staying in the middle of an enormous tourist trap, we would probably not have stayed here. It is very expensive.

The town is quaint in a touristy way with beautifully restored XIIIC and XIVC buildings but far too many little shops all selling the same sort of tourist trash. The parador is certainly a fine and interesting building and our room overlooking the square was comfortable.

Dinner was disappointing. Although the food was OK (no more) the restaurant was full and understaffed. We had to wait for half an hour before we could place an order and that rather set the tone for the evening.

This parador did not represent value for money for us and we would not stay here again

  10. Jose G Molinari says:

The Parador is smack in the middle of the village, but has plenty of parking available.
The restoration is brilliantly done, the room quite large with a balcony and a modern bathroom with both bathtub and shower.
The hotel is spacious with many living spaces available for guests.
    The service was excelent.
And I had dinner at the restaurant and the regional tasting menu was EXCELLENT!
One of the best hotels I have stayed in spain.

  11. Liz & Alistair Forsyth says:

We stayed for one night in August 2010 The hotel was quite grand and the bedroom spacious and comfortable. Dinner was disappointing, the food very ordinary and overcooked. Service was not very attentive. My wife had the gourmet speciality of the region dinner which was very poor. The hot breakfast was cold. Altogether por value for money.
The village is pretty but the shops are a disappointment – they all sell poor quality tourist tat. We felt that craft shops with home-made wares would have been more appropriate.

  12. John Kerr says:

We stayed in the main lodge and it was much like other paradors we had stayed in. Service was efficient and friendly and the breakfast was good. Dinner was okay with good wine and service. It was a bit hard to find the parador and we had to go to a tourist office to get a map. There could be a few more small signs as it is a tiny village. Overall experience was good.

  13. Mr A R Burnett says:

Stayed one night in July 2010. Reception was good and they were well aware of our booking. Bedrooms were large and comfortable. Food was good both at breakfast and in the evening in the restaurant. Service was good and the meal not rushed. Menuing a little confusing and could possibly need changing.
Parking at the other Parador was easy although we arrived at 11.30 in the morning the rooms were available from midday. I last visited this town 45 years ago and nothing seems to have changed except the traffic
Beautiful town well worth a visit

  14. Lilian Morgan says:

We stayed for one night and had a lovely stay. Our room was wonderful, with an enormous balcony looking over the countryside and distant Picos. My daughter had a lovely room on the floor below. Reception was fine. We had a very pleasant snack lunch in the bar, enjoyable dinner in the restaurant and good breakfast next day before we set off for Santander and home. The staff were always friendly.

Santillana is a lovely little town, just right for an afternoon and evening visit. Unfortunately we had no time to visit the caves or any surrounding attractions.

Santillana Gil Blas was a most enjoyable stay for all three of us and sent us home with happy memories.

  15. Barbara Harms says:

We stayed for two nights and had a lovely large room with the garden view. Everything was excellant except for a snippy who man who worked at the restaurant. We went on to the terrace to have a light lunch and we were treated very rudely by this man. The rest of the holiday was wonderful. It is a shame how one person can spoil a perfect moment.

  16. Simon Lovegrove says:

Try not to be put off too much by some of the negative comments people have made, it is a great shame if they had a bad experience. We stayed for two nights in March 2010 and have no complaints at all about the Parador or the town. The reception staff were friendly and efficient, and spoke good English. The room was beautiful, with timber floors, beams and shutters and a nice outlook to the side garden, with a large modern ensuite. It was clean and quiet, and considering how unique it is, in our view surprisingly inexpensive. The Parador and in fact the whole town is beautifully historic, very authentic, in a rural setting and not overly touristy. We were there at an off-peak time but there were still several bars and restaurants to choose from, fairly quiet but with most of the customers being locals which was nice. The town is easy to get to and, with an interim excursion to nearby very pleasant Suances, we had no problem at all filling two days. We preferred to eat out in the Town so did not try the Parador restaurant but had drinks in the bar terrace and the service and surroundings were lovely. We were ready to move on after two days but would not have missed our Santillana experience for anything, and our stay at the Parador Gil Blas was one of the highlights of our trip.

  17. Neil Crowder says:

We stayed for 2 nights at the start of our holiday and were given an attic room with roof lights and no view; very expensive for such basic accommodation, although the room itself was comfortable. The reception was efficient and helpful and the restaurant bright and airy with a good breakfast buffet available. The hotel was busy but still managed to be quiet and relaxing. On our way home we stayed for a further night and this time we were given a large room with a balcony, which was much more in keeping with our visits to three other Paradores on our holiday. We would come back again to Santillana if we were sure we would get value for money.

  18. Bernard Webster says:

The parador occupies a very beautiful building and is extremely well located in the heart of Santillana. However, our room was extremely poor, lit only by a skylight and furnished in a very utilitarian style. Whilst we booked at relatively short notice at a busy time and only a ‘basic room’ was available, that term was never properly explained when we made the booking and the price was little different to that of a ‘standard room’. The room was simply totally unacceptable at the inflated price charged and, had their been any alternative, we would not have accepted it. I had never heard the term ‘basic room’ before when staying at other paradores but,on the basis of our experience, they are to be avoided at all costs! As others have commented, the breakfast was fine, if a little expensive, but dinner in the restaurant was extremely disappointing. Bar service was also almost non-existent so it was difficult to take coffee or a drink in the very pleasant gardens outside.

We have now stayed in more than a dozen different paradores in various parts of Spain and this is the only one to which I would definitely not return or recommend to anyone else.

  19. David Baillie Bell says:

My wife Sue and I stopped for three nights. The room, with enormous balcony/terrace, was splendid. The staff were friendly and obliging. The food was just ordinary but served with a smile and we enjoyed the experience. The village, surrounding countryside and beaches are some of the best and given the lovely weather we enjoyed it was impossible not to have a great time.

The building work mentioned by others was complete and the hotel faultless. We had a deal through Brittany Ferries and thought they must have got the price wrong.

Just a wonderful holiday in a great place.

  20. Michael Romano says:

We stayed for 2 (separate) nights in August and September. We loved the location of the Parador in the pretty, bustling village of Santillana, and appreciated the building and internal fittings. A very pleasant bedroom and interesting well-cooked and well-presented meals helped make for a very enjoyable stay. No complaints that we can remember; except that the nearby caves were shut by the time we arrived, and closed the next day! We never really got used to Spanish opening hours.

  21. Jackie Betteridge says:

We stayed in several paradores in August and this was the one I was most looking forward to but it ended up being the one that I was the most disappointed in. The staff quite curt and it took a while to check in, I was actually starting to think that perhaps they didn’t want any visitors to stay at the parador it was just there for show! The room was quite small and smelt of damp. The resturant for dinner was pleasant but not as special as some of the other paradores. We ended up eating quite late so did not want breakfast, so we went down to the bar/cafe area to get coffee and was told that we could only have coffee if we were having breakfast. I thought that they were joking and had not understood what we had asked for (my husband can speak Spanish). So I complained at reception and pointed out that they were a hotel so why were we unable to get something as basic as a cup of coffee, they just kept repeating that if we wanted coffe then we would have to go into the village!! We would not stay there again!! However, there are lots of other wonderful paradores to stay in and I intend to experience them all!

  22. E Ellard (Ireland) says:

We stayed for five nights in early July. The staff were welcoming and friendly. The room was large, comfortable and quiet, overliiking the courtyard. We loved the building and furnishings. We did not have dinner but the breakfasts were excellent. It was our first experience of staying in a parador and one we hope to repeat. Santillana is beautiful. It was very busy during the day but quiet at night time (which we prefer). Everyone we encountered were very friendly and helpful.

  23. Mrs Ann Doidge-Harrison says:

We stayed here one night in a most beautiful room with a balcony over the cafe/courtyard with a tremendous view and all at Golden Days price. We loved our morning exploration of the town and had a delightful lunch in the large garden of a nearby restaurant. The evening meal at the Parador was the worst we had encountered in a month’s stay in Northern Spain. How can they bear to do that to good ingredients and recipes? Our room was splendid but we think we should have been warned that there were renovations going on, and screens and scaffolding around the building. The nearby Parador was only just across the small main square and looked great. It shares a car park with Gil Blas and would have been a good alternative as long as the chef isn’t also shared.

  24. Yoka Terbrugge says:

Rooms are standard as in most paradors.
We overslept in the morning but staff still offered us a small breakfast.
Too bad building was in scaffolding due to roof repairs.

  25. Stewart Ewen says:

we stayed 2 nights in May, the main building was completely covered in scaffolding and mesh…terrible, the room had a stale smell and we really could not open the windows as there was workmen around.
The food was ordinary at both dinner time and breakfast, the wine we chose was unavailable …this place should be closed while they undertake work…i spoke to the manager and his attitude was ”oh well we have waited months for the work to start ” and that was it…Don,t stay there, not worth the hassel of the cost !

  26. Ronald Urquhart says:

We stayed for one night in April.
Reception was slow but friendly. The lady was on the phone to a friend.

Room was large but smelled of a dead rat! (Possibly the plumbing)

Restaurant was dreadful. Dinner was unimaginative and basic. Breakfast was awful. I wouldn’t have touched the cold, brown scrambled eggs.

A lovely village but the parador needs a shake-up.

  27. Troy Hightower says:

This is a very nice historical parador. We had a lovely large room with a huge terrace. The restaurant was very good and the staff helpful.

  28. George Montalván says:

We stayed 2 nights at the Gil Blas Parador (March-April 2009). The reception and staff were very helpful and efficient, and the room was large and very comfortable, with a nice view and quiet. The restaurant was excellent (although scrambled eggs at the buffet breakfast were a bit cold both days). Unfortunately not much was happening in Santillana del Mar at that time of year, nor in the surrounding towns. Santillana del Mar is a 2-hour town (to visit), old and quaint, but not special in any other way.
