Parador Ciudad Rodrigo
The ivy-covered Parador of Ciudad Rodrigo Hotel is perched on a sheer drop over the River Agueda valley and the castle has a keep which serves as an unbeatable observatory to look out over the Campo Charro landscapes.
This is the ideal enclave to discover the beauty of the marvellous surrounding nature and appreciate the rich monumental city of Ciudad Rodrigo.
The impeccable garden, the meticulous period details, Castilian furnishings, the splendid patio and bright rooms – some with exceptional views – are some of the highlights.
The stone arches in the dining room are greatly admired, as are the typical Charro cuisine with the standout local sausage – farinato – succulent roasts and Iberian hams.
Information and reservations at Parador of Ciudad Rodrigo

Our first visit to a Parador, on a trip around five of them. All the staff were very helpful. My wife is disabled and they were quick to help her on the passenger lift. Breakfast was prepaid, and was as good as other comments said they were. We didn’t eat in the Parador in the evening, after seeing the (generally) negative comments. However, the Plaza Mayor had only ordinary places to eat.
This was the second Prador at which we stayed and both were FANTASTIC. I would highly recommend this one as well as the one in Hondarribia. The staff was extra nice and helpful and the restaurant was excellent.
We stayed at Rodrigo Parador with our four children en route to the Algarve. We were amazed by the rooms and the quality of service – our only regret is that we didnt stay longer!
Breakfast was superb!
Stunning hotel, surprisingly difficult to find! Excellent reception. Lovely room and grounds. Had to wait a long time for anyone to staff the bar before dinner. The dinner menu was less than tempting and the food was absolutely dreadful. In contrast breakfast was extremely good.
Reception staff greeted us warmly, the room they gave us was excellent with a view over the car park. It was very clean, light and airy. The public rooms were comfortable and interesting As regards the restaurant, breakfast was of a good standard with a varied selection. We cannot get our head around the Dinner menu however. What we ordered was edible but ,we feel ,very poor value for money. Nobody, whichever parador we stay in, seems to be able to speak sufficient English, to be of help. Finding our way out of the Parador to the main route was very hard.
A wonderful start to a 5 paradors in 7 nights. The front desk staff were very, very helpful. We were able to climb the tower – well worth the climb, but it’s rarely open – ask the staff. The room was nice and clean. The parador itself was gorgeous – great light, terrific furniture and accessories. The breakfast had a wide variety of choices, all good and one of only two of the paradors to serve delicious migas. The only drawback to it was not having the thick hot chocolate into which you dip churros. The town itself was great to walk around in. We had a good and very inexpensive dinner (menu del dia) sitting outside one of the cafeterias on the Plaza Mayor. We’d go again!
We stayed just one night en-route to Porto. The reception staff were excellent and very helpful, the breakfast was of the usual high standard although we did have to wait rather a long time for our coffee despite trying to attract the attention of the waiting staff. Were we being ignored whilst people who arrived in the dining room after us were served? Not sure.
The room, although small, had a wonderful view of the river. The town itself is of limited interest and can be seen in a couple of hours. Food anywhere in the town before 2030 is difficult to find and once the day trip tourists have gone home, the town is empty. I would recommend this hotel as a good place to stay if you are en-route to somewhere but to make a specific journey to the town would probably be a waste of time.
We enjoyed the 2 night stay. Everything was perfect except the dinner and the service in the restaurant. The staff could not speak english and were not at the expected level.
Next time we visit Spain we would like to stay at a paradores-hotel
The Parador was interesting and historic like the whole town. We visited because of my interest in Wellington’s storming of the town’s walls which are still visible. The museaum was also very good to visit. This Parador has no swimming pool but the river has some lovely bathing areas where we swum, the staff at receiption could have mentioned this to us when we asked whether the Parador had a swimming pool. Breakfast was of a superior quality and our bedroom, which did not have a view, was very comfortable. All the staff spoke very good English.
Staff good; ambiance ~ a typically good Parador adaptation of an historic castle. Cuisine to usual excellent standard, but bedrooms rather small and long walk from reception [and an irritating short-cut to the enclosed private car park closed to residents]. No UK language channels on room TV.
The town is a remarkably preserved example of an eighteenth centuray fortifed town but otherwise of very limited interest. Allow about 1 hour to walk the city walls and abouot the same for the town itself.
First stop between Santander and Portimao, searched for a Parador hotel on the web in Ciudad Rodrigo and voila ! Towing a double axle box trailer made it a bit hairy to find, and even more hairy to exit from to main highway, (no signs and very narrow streets) but everything else was excellent. Warm and helpful reception, magnificent room — think it was a suite — and having to catch up on some work, took room service, which was first class — the food was delicious. Breakfast was so good it kept me going for the rest of the day. In all, a very pleasant experience and highly recommended.
I stayed for one night, en route from Lisbon to Bilbao. It is quite difficult to locate the Parador by car, but once you find it you are in for a treat. The building is lovely – very historic, well appointed and decorated, and comfortable. The staff were wonderfully pleasant, polite and helpful (maybe it helps that I am a flunt Spanish speaker). Dinner was also excellent (but be warned that the steak will probably be served very rare, whatever you ask for!). Overall, it was a very pleasant stay and I would certainly return.
The Parador is lovely with good location and easy parking. We opted for golden years deal, and were disappointed with the size of room, dark,no view at all, ( windows were high), and very strong smell of stale cigar smoke, despite asking for a non smoking room.
There was no option for any food before 20.30,not even room service, which was difficult after such a long drive. We would not recommend it to others. The room was quiet though and easy walk into town.
The breakfast was outstanding.
The Parador is really delightful. Staying in such a really historical & beatiful castle was a rare treat. The service was impeccable.
The food was good. In all a great place to stop. The town is small & interesting.
We had a very comfortable stay, our room was very well appointed.
The food was excellent .
The Staff were most welcoming and very helpful.
I would also like to thank the central booking service for their help and efficiency.
A great place for a stop on our journey to the Algarve, Ciudad Rodrigo is always worth a visit and the Parador is well situated a walk into town. The Hotel itself provides a very comfortable and and calm base and the resturant provides a good repast, with wonderful views.
We really enjoyed our stay in this parador. Our room was very spacious , clean and nicely furnished. The receptionists were friendly and helpful. The service in the restaurant was a little slow but the food was good. It was nice to be able to walk from the hotel to the centre of the town as well as being able to enjoy the gardens and the lovely views of the surroundings.
We enjoyed our overnight stay. The Staff there were amongst the best we have ever encountered in years of Parador visits. So pleasant and helpful. The cuisine was excellent too. I will visit them again on my way down to southern Spainj
