Comments Parador Cangas de Onis
Tradition has it that it was built by Rey Alfonso I, ‘The Catholic’, on February 21st 746, with excavations carried out before conversion work started on the building for the Parador supporting the idea. The present monastery was founded on the site and run by the Order of San Benito until the 1835 sale of Church lands.
Two rooms displaying archaeological remains found during refurbishment work, especially ceramics, bear witness to its distant past.
The Monastery was declared a National Monument in 1907 with a new wing added using matching building materials to match the original. Set on the green banks of the River Sella, this jewel is reflected in the waters below.
The magnificent Picos de Europa setting frames the backdrop. The modern and comfortable facilities at Parador of Cangas de Onis make it the ideal spot to discover the wondrous Asturian landscape, enjoy local colour at celebrations and the ancestral folklore, as well as savour the best most genuine dishes from the rich local cuisine.

Information and reservations at Parador of Cangas de Onis
We had the most enchanted experience at Cangas de Onis. Out of the three paradores we stayed in this one took the cake. The setting is gorgeous with the proximity to the river surrounded by mountains. The parador is of course an amazing step back in time, but the amenities and quality of restaurant, bar, community areas are first rate. Highly recommend.
Hi,
Wonderful food, great setting, and nice people. Our stay was a real pleasure. Two of the highlights of our trip to Spain were Covadonga, and especilly Cueva de El Buxo, located just a few minutes from the Parador. We hope to return soon.
We had a very pleasant stay at the Parador. The staff were very friendly with a special mention for the barman, Ramon, who was brilliant.
Our room was very nice, in the old part of the Parador. Breakfast was good however the only downside was the dinners. We did not find the food particularly good, a lot better to be had in Cangas de Onis and cheaper. The main gripe we had was the lighting in the dining room. It was like eating in a canteen, totally at odds with the rest of the Parador.
Despite this I would recommend the Parador, which is in an amazing area which we will visit again.
Overall, the hotel was a slight disappontment although there were very good experiences also. The worst was really in the beginning – nobody bothered to tell us where our rooms are located not to mention helping with the luggage. This resulted in pointless and endless wandering around the corridors with all our luggage. The “superior” rooms were quite OK, but really dark. More light would urgently be needed. Breakfast was very good and other meals reasonably good, although there was no variation in the menu for day to day. However, the first evening salmon was clearly over-aged and unconsumable. The restaurant could not offer anything outside from the menu as we had dinner to celebrate my 50th birthday although we asked – not a special drink, any greeting, nothing. But we could use the chapel for a friend´s song present which was nice. The location was not ideal for trekking as many of the better Picos treks need over 2 hours driving to be reached. Conclusion: quite a pleasant stay, but not completely what we had expected.
Our stay here was very good. The standard of everything was as we come to expect from the Paradores.
Your reception on arrival – GOOD
The bedroom – OK
The view from your room – OK
The public rooms – NICE
The restaurant -GOOD
The location of the hotel – EXCELNET
Proximity to a town – OK
Any places visited near the hotel – OK
Etc.
We had an excellent stay. The location could not be better, away from the main road, very quiet, next to a beatifull river with a view to the Picos de Europa mountains. We had a great room in the abbey. Very clean with all facilities. Great housekeeping staff. All personnel were extremly helpfull and went out of their way to make our stay a pleasure. I intend to be back and will certainly recommend the hotel to all who wish to spend a relaxing few days in the countryside. Great restaurants in the neighboring towns.
This Parador was an unexpectedly unpleasant experience. Our room in the new block was comfortable in a typical modern hotel format but severely lacked sound proofing and all noises from adjacent rooms were clearly audible. A late arrival in the room above ours, wearing high heels and moving furniture and bags on bare floors kept me awake until well after 2am; not what was required after a tiring day. My complaint to reception in the morning was professionally handled and the tariff reduced. The older sections of the Parador are most interesting and well on a par with other Paradors that I have visited as were the dining facilities and menu. If this Parador using poetic licence can be promoted as being located close to heaven then regretably room 105 must be described as being close to hell.
We stayed for two nights in October. Reception staff were pleasant, but due to a phone call, we were kept waiting for this to be dealt with. Surely there should be someone dedicated to answering the phone. Site was excellent as was the hotel generally. Of the three we stayed in on this trip this hotel was the noisiest, it was similar to stopping in a much cheaper overnight stop hotel. The breakfasts were very good and the restaurant was the best of the three Paradores we stayed at. However it was still not great and we would have expected better food and service in this price bracket. Loved the area though.
We stayed at the hotel for one night and it was fantastic. From the moment we entered until we left the service was perfect. We really enjoyed the wonderful dinner and breakfast. We had a room that opened up to the river and I haven’t slept so well as that night in many years. We will come back and we highly recommend this Parador.
We had a very pleasant stay at Cangas de Onis on 8th September. The room was spacious, quiet, overlooked the river and had a lovely view. On arrival, the staff were very helpful and pleasant as they were throughout our stay. Dinner and breakfast were great and the service excellent. This was our first stop and a superb start before a week’s tour of North West Spain
We stayed for two nights at the end of June this year.
The room was perfect. It overlooked the river and was quiet and very comfortable.
For a night stop whilst travelling or a longer stay for those who are outdoor types the hotel would be hard to beat.
The staff were without exception kind and helpful. The dining room staff were particularly good. The food and service were for us perfect.
Our only observation (not a criticism) is that the dining room lacked the wonderful atmosphere that is found elsewhere in the hotel.
The best of the Paradores that we stayed in.
I would particularly like to thank the staff at reception who were welcoming and helpful, not universal at Paradors, but so important for the experience. The setting is superb and the cloisters perfect for a pre-prandial in warm weather. We also found the archaeological displays interesting. More could perhaps be done with the recently planted grove of native trees and to show the church. Higly recommended.
We thoroughly enjoyed our one-night stay in this parador. The staff were very welcoming as we arrived very wet and with bicycles, and they didnt mind at all! Room was lovely. Unfortunately we couldnt enjoy the gardens etc because of the weather but both dinner and breakfast were excellent. Very nice, relaxed atmosphere throughout. (Also stayed in Santillana del Mar parador , which wasn’t as nice.)
A very clean, well run hotel.
Unfortunately on our stay the outside weather showed up the inadequacies of the windows which had warped and did not fit at all, allowing in the cold damp air that was not to be expected in June.
The restaurant service was good and the food very tasty.
If the windows, etc., were improved, then we would stay again.
We have stayed 1 night during the beginning of October 2009.
The room was nice, but not WOW. I suppose we could have gotten as much a nice room in another, more cheaper hotel, in that area.
The food was really great – we had both breakfast and dinner and we enjoyed both very much.
All in all – I would sleep in another, more cheaper hotel in or around Cangas, but defenetly come over to the Parador for dinner and/or breakfast.
A very good overnight stay. Very friendly and courteous reception.
excellent room and enjoyable restaurant. Thank you
We stayed in the hotel for just one night in Apr. Very nice hotel with spacious rooms and good location by the river. Excellent place for relaxing. Highly recommend this hotel as a good alternative to most Cangas hotels in town (you will not really rest there and feel the mountains).
We had another pleasant stay at Cangas de Onis March 12th to 18th. The rooms were as good as we remembered and the service excellent. The staff were, as always, very helpful and pleasant. Your Maitre d’ was a delight and so cheerful and helpful (we apologised for our lack of knowledge of Spanish). Breakfast was very good and the waiter very helpful. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and fully recommend this Parador.
