Parador Cangas de Onis
Tradition has it that it was built by Rey Alfonso I, ‘The Catholic’, on February 21st 746, with excavations carried out before conversion work started on the building for the Parador supporting the idea. The present monastery was founded on the site and run by the Order of San Benito until the 1835 sale of Church lands.
Two rooms displaying archaeological remains found during refurbishment work, especially ceramics, bear witness to its distant past.
The Monastery was declared a National Monument in 1907 with a new wing added using matching building materials to match the original. Set on the green banks of the River Sella, this jewel is reflected in the waters below.
The magnificent Picos de Europa setting frames the backdrop. The modern and comfortable facilities at Parador of Cangas de Onis make it the ideal spot to discover the wondrous Asturian landscape, enjoy local colour at celebrations and the ancestral folklore, as well as savour the best most genuine dishes from the rich local cuisine.

We stayed for two nights at the end of June this year.
The room was perfect. It overlooked the river and was quiet and very comfortable.
For a night stop whilst travelling or a longer stay for those who are outdoor types the hotel would be hard to beat.
The staff were without exception kind and helpful. The dining room staff were particularly good. The food and service were for us perfect.
Our only observation (not a criticism) is that the dining room lacked the wonderful atmosphere that is found elsewhere in the hotel.
The best of the Paradores that we stayed in.
I would particularly like to thank the staff at reception who were welcoming and helpful, not universal at Paradors, but so important for the experience. The setting is superb and the cloisters perfect for a pre-prandial in warm weather. We also found the archaeological displays interesting. More could perhaps be done with the recently planted grove of native trees and to show the church. Higly recommended.
We thoroughly enjoyed our one-night stay in this parador. The staff were very welcoming as we arrived very wet and with bicycles, and they didnt mind at all! Room was lovely. Unfortunately we couldnt enjoy the gardens etc because of the weather but both dinner and breakfast were excellent. Very nice, relaxed atmosphere throughout. (Also stayed in Santillana del Mar parador , which wasn’t as nice.)
A very clean, well run hotel.
Unfortunately on our stay the outside weather showed up the inadequacies of the windows which had warped and did not fit at all, allowing in the cold damp air that was not to be expected in June.
The restaurant service was good and the food very tasty.
If the windows, etc., were improved, then we would stay again.
We have stayed 1 night during the beginning of October 2009.
The room was nice, but not WOW. I suppose we could have gotten as much a nice room in another, more cheaper hotel, in that area.
The food was really great – we had both breakfast and dinner and we enjoyed both very much.
All in all – I would sleep in another, more cheaper hotel in or around Cangas, but defenetly come over to the Parador for dinner and/or breakfast.
A very good overnight stay. Very friendly and courteous reception.
excellent room and enjoyable restaurant. Thank you
We stayed in the hotel for just one night in Apr. Very nice hotel with spacious rooms and good location by the river. Excellent place for relaxing. Highly recommend this hotel as a good alternative to most Cangas hotels in town (you will not really rest there and feel the mountains).
We had another pleasant stay at Cangas de Onis March 12th to 18th. The rooms were as good as we remembered and the service excellent. The staff were, as always, very helpful and pleasant. Your Maitre d’ was a delight and so cheerful and helpful (we apologised for our lack of knowledge of Spanish). Breakfast was very good and the waiter very helpful. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and fully recommend this Parador.
